  • New coalition government must unconditionally release human rights defenders
Centre for Community Development in Zimbabwe (CCDZ)
    February 18, 2009

The incarceration of human rights defenders on trumped up charges smacks of President Mugabe's hypocrisy and insincerity in the new coalition government. The Centre for Community Development in Zimbabwe is vindicated that the coalition government will not work as long as President Mugabe fails to reign in on unruly elements belonging to his ZANU PF party.

The arrest of Roy Bennett, the Deputy Minister-designate for Agriculture and the continued incarceration of rights defenders, among them Jestina Mukoko is demonstrative of a regime that is refusing to yield to the peoples' demands for a new Zimbabwe. As C.C.D.Z, we call upon the political elites to bury the hatchet and put their differences aside for the common good. We urge the political elites to urgently embark on the following measures to restore people's confidence in the new system of governance.

    1. That the new Coalition government must unconditionally release all the political prisoners and human rights defenders and allow access to medication for the prisoners without any hindrances.

    2. That there be put in place measures and clear benchmarks to revive education, health and other social services which have virtually collapsed.

    3. To set in motion a participatory, democratic and all-inclusive process of constitutional reform.

    4. Introduce a sustainable economic recovery programme that deals with inflation, 90 % rate of unemployment and restore the strength of the Zimbabwean currency.
