Allegations
against Jestina Mukoko false

December 26, 2008
Allegations of insurgency and banditry being levelled against Jestina
Mukoko, the National Director of ZPP are false and totally without
basis. These are meant to tarnish the image of ZPP hence make it
easy for the state to destabilise the organisation. Jestina Mukoko
is a human rights activist and not an MDC activist as purported
in Zimbabwe's state-owned media. ZPP monitors and documents
politically motivated human rights violations in Zimbabwe. The abduction
of Jestina and others was a breach of the laws of Zimbabwe. If she
was guilty of any crime she should have been brought to the courts
within the stipulated 48 hours and not 21 days.
Accusations
of insurgency and banditry activities levelled against Jestina Mukoko
are fictious and fake given the insubstantial case that has been
created against her and others. Zimbabwe Peace Project operates
within the confines of the laws of Zimbabwe and has not breached
their mandate in any way suggested by the allegations against Jestina
and by implication ZPP.
Zimbabwe Peace
Project believes that these false accusations are efforts to disband
the organization and hi-jack its monitoring and documentation of
politically human rights motivated violations programme. ZPP work
is more pertinent now more than ever given that ZANU PF supporters
have been instructed to gear up for elections in the near future.
Abductions are
criminal and cannot be justified by any trumped up charges. These
actions go against the Section 10 of the Global
Political Agreement on the security of persons. The people responsible
for these must account and the culture of impunity be brought to
an end. ZPP is concerned that the Zimbabwe Republic Police has failed
to obey court rulings as per High Court Orders to release Ms Jestina
Mukoko and others.
ZPP expresses
gratitude to all the organizations that have worked tirelessly to
help ZPP in their hour of need. We wish to thank Zimbabwe
Lawyers for Human Rights, Crisis
in Zimbabwe Coalition and all those that worked behind the scenes
too numerous to mention that we can not mention by name for their
spiritual, moral and material support.
