  • Jestina Mukoko and other abductees found
    Zimbabwe Peace Project
    December 24, 2008

Zimbabwe Peace Project (ZPP) National Director, Ms Jestina Mukoko, abducted on the 3rd of December 2008 by state agents, was found yesterday 23rd December 2008 at Matapi police station in Mbare. Pascal Gonzo another abductee was found at Rhodesville police station. Yesterday around 1700hours, some members of ZPP were phoned by police officers who said they were holding Jestina and demanded keys to the ZPP National Office within the next hour. The officers informed Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights who then took over the case.

The lawyers were initially denied access to the abductees by the police who indicated that they were not the ones holding them. Charges have yet been pressed against them but the nature of charges still needs to be confirmed. Ms Jestina Mukoko and others are due to appear in court this afternoon. Jestina Mukoko has been held for 21 days while Broderick Takawira and Pascal Gonzo have been held for 14 days.

ZPP is concerned that the state controlled newspaper, The Herald 24 December 2008, has since published claims that Jestina Mukoko and Broderick Takawira and other MDC -T activists were responsible for recruiting people to undergo military training in Botswana with a view to overthrow the government. They have violated the presumption of innocence.

We categorically deny the allegations and disassociate ourselves in the alleged acts of banditry. ZPP is a lawfully registered organization whose mission is to work for the peace of Zimbabwe.

ZPP condemns the abductions, the unlawful arrest and detention of human rights activists and demands justice to prevail for the three ZPP staffers, Jestina Mukoko, Broderick Takawira, Pascal Gonzo and all other persons who have been abducted.
