CPIA applauds the signing of the power sharing agreement
Center
For Peace Initiatives In Africa (CPIA)
September 16, 2008
What
happened on Monday, 15 September 2008, at the Rainbow Towers Conference
Centre was truly historical. The Centre for Peace Initiatives in
Africa would like to join other Zimbabweans - organisations and
individuals - in congratulating President Robert Mugabe, Prime
Minister-Designate Morgan Tsvangirai and Deputy Prime Minister-Designate
Arthur Mutambara for burying their differences and putting their
signatures onto the Power Sharing Document.
When President Thabo
Mbeki officiated at the ceremony and proceeded to invite the three
leaders to make a few remarks there was a collective sigh of relief
and spontaneous joy in the Conference Centre and throughout the
country. Zimbabweans had been waiting for this day with batted breath,
a day that will no doubt mark a new beginning in terms of their
personal lives and the political and economic fortunes of the country.
We sincerely hope that the agreement will ensure that never again
shall sons and daughters of Zimbabwe be at each others throat.
We sincerely hope that
the selection and configuration of the Cabinet will underline the
same spirit of maturity and a sense of purpose that characterised
the process that culminated in the crafting of the power sharing
deal.
At a conference held
in Vumba on 9 - 12 September, CPIA was requested, among other
things, to 'lobby Parliament to pass an Act on Reconciliation,
Justice and Peace and recommend the establishment of a Truth and
Reconciliation Commission'. We are delighted that the agreement
signed on Monday has provision for such mechanism. We are convinced
that for the country to start on a clean slate and move forward
in harmony and unity, a genuine healing process is a priority. In
this regard CPIA is convening a Conference in Mutare, on 14 -
17 October 2008 to discuss the way forward.
Like other patriotic
and peace-loving Zimbabweans, CPIA supports and stands ready to
do whatever possible to promote the Power Sharing Document.
