Zanu
PF still harassing people for political reasons
Bulawayo
Agenda
July 14, 2008
Bulawayo
Today the clean up programme organized by BPRA in partnership with
the city council was launched under the theme 'Restore the
pride, keep Bulawayo clean'. They cleaned around Egodini and
surrounding areas and even went as far as Madlodlo. They also distributed
fliers on hygienic practices and taxi tunes from Radio
Dialogue about keeping Bulawayo. The clean up continues tomorrow
were different wards will converge in Nkulumane at Sekusile where
they will undertake the same programme.
In another incident,
there was mayhem at Egodini bus terminus when Commuter omnibus drivers
and touts threatened to beat up Zanu PF activists for allegedly
swindling them of money. This was after the Zanu PF activists demanded
ten billion dollars from all the Kombis that entered the bay. The
Kombi drivers grouped and demanded that they be given back their
money. The situation grew worse as the kombi drivers became violent,
beating up a woman who was the most vocal in demanding money from
the kombis. This came to a halt when police officers came and promised
to take action against the activists.
Gweru
In Gweru Zanu PF supporters are still harassing people for political
reasons. On Friday Doritha Chanda was approached by Zanu PF agents
who took from her 40 litres of amasi and 40kg of maize. All this
was taken from her on grounds that she is an MDC supporter.
Meanwhile, Gibson Nhanete
an employee at ZACRO was detained at Nehanda police station for
8 hours yesterday. He arrived at the police station 16:40 and was
released after midnight. The police interrogated him but he did
not respond to any of their questions. Annoyed the police started
telling Nhanete about his family, where he works and other general
things that he does. They boasted about how well they knew him.
He was released without charge and threatened with another detention.
Nhanete was once assaulted by Zanu PF activists in 2002.
Plumtree
A man from Zimnyama has been sentenced to 9 years in jail for stealing
and slaughtering someone's cow. The man is said to have done
this during the time when he was at a Zanu PF base before the 27
June run off elections. Soon after the election results were released
Plumtree police officers started investigating people who committed
crimes before and during election time. This has resulted in the
arrest of several men from Plumtree.
Tsholotsho
Some villagers have had to sleep on the roadside, awaiting the Grain
Marketing Board truck that delivers maize. They did this because
women who are Zanu PF supporters wear the party regalia when going
to collect maize so that they are easily noticed and are the first
to be given maize. The last time there was a delivery the millers
took the maize and promised the villagers that they would give out
mealie-meal first thing the next morning but instead they delivered
all of it to the Zanu PF supporters late at night.
Accordingly, the Grain
Marketing Board gives out a 50kg bag of maize to a group of 5 people
who then share it, each getting 10kg.
