  • Violence heats up in Mberengwa north
    Zimbabwe Peace Project
    May 23, 2008

The post election period has seen an upsurge in politically motivated violence in the Mberengwa area of the Midlands. ZPP has received reports that from the 14th -18th of May and even to date people in Mberengwa North have been targeted with violence. Topping the list of victims in such reports are teachers from schools in the Mabika, Chomusenda, Chaza and Chingwena resettlement areas.

All teachers from Mabika Primary and Secondary schools, Chomusenda, Chaza and Chegwena Primary schools are said to have fled the area on either 'transfer' or just fled to the bush and mountains and only return to their homes at night looking for food. The teachers are being victimized and assaulted by war veterans and Zanu PF militia (Names supplied). The named schools have since been closed. Most of the assaulted victims are still in the villages needing urgent medical attention. Among the severely injured are PM, a teacher from Mabika, S, a teacher from Chomusenda Primary School, TMM of Cheshanga ward, Mr Z also of Cheshanga ward, LM, and S, and are currently unable to access medical assistance as the nearest hospital Mnene is about 60km away.

In a related case, one BN of the MDC T had his homestead in Chaza ward burnt down and was living in the bush and mountains. Another 21 victims from the area are said to have been displaced and are in urgent need of food and other basic needs as they fled the area fearing victimization by the war veterans.

It is understood that the perpetrators are being led by two well known war veterans who have formed groups (names of group leaders also available) sending them to different areas in the region to cause terror.
