MDC
The death toll from post-election political violence amongst Zimbabwe's
main opposition party, the Movement for Democratic Change activists
and supporters has risen to 33. Better Chokururama, the National
Youth Executive member of the MDC was found murdered on Sunday by
suspected war veterans. The news of his death only reached Harare
yesterday, Wednesday the 14th of May 2008.
Opposition sources said
Chokururama was still recovering from a beating he received three
weeks ago (which left him on clutches) when he was abducted on Saturday
and stabbed to death.
The party's
Secretary for Security Youth Assembly, Tonderai
Ndira, who was abducted from his Mabvuku home on Wednesday morning
by heavily armed police has still not been found.
ZCTU
Justice Ben Hlatshwayo of the High Court judge has deferred bail
ruling on the Zimbabwe
Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) leaders, Wellington Chibebe
and Lovemore Matombo to next week Monday the 19th of May 2008. Hlatshwayo
informed the court that he would not be able to pass the judgment,
as yet since the case
is too difficult to handle hence he needed more time. Chibebe
and Matongo are accused of inciting public violence on May Day are
therefore still in custody as "the state fears they may instigate
more violence."
PTUZ
The Secretary General of the Progressive
Teachers' Union of Zimbabwe (PTUZ) Raymond Majongwe was
today, 15 May 2008 arrested by the police. The incident occurred
at the High Court of Zimbabwe where Majongwe was attending a case
of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) President, Lovemore
Matombo and Secretary General Wellington Chibebe. The police wanted
Majongwe to explain the PTUZ Press Statement in "The Standard
Zimbabwe" of last week, in which PTUZ complained about violence
against teachers by youth militias.
