Zimbabwe Nurses Association for Human Rights (ZimNAHR)
    May 02, 2008

The Zimbabwe Nurses Association for Human Rights though yet to be formally launched, wishes to join the rest of the civic society in Zimbabwe in condemning all forms of violence being perpetrated on innocent civilians countrywide.

Whilst we remain politically impartial we would like to demand a commitment from the political leadership in Zimbabwe's political parties to the existence of a free and peaceful country where people can live, walk and talk freely without a cloud of tension and intimidation hanging in the sky.

The current situation is not doing anything to relieve the stress that is on the overall health delivery system. Victims of political violence can not access medical care on time whilst those who do either can not afford the ever rising hospital costs or find the health institutions with no drugs at all. This situation further stresses the Nurses who make up the largest percentage of health professionals both in the private and public sectors.

The nurses although being the majority in the health sector continue to receive paltry remuneration from employers resulting in many leaving the country in large numbers for greener pastures. There is a growing number of nurses who have completely abandoned the trade for other income generating activities such as market gardening, vendoring, cross boarder trading, or just staying home whilst a smaller percentage has opted to go back to school for different career pursuits.

There are several incidents of intimidation and victimization of our colleagues who are stationed in different health centres countrywide.

We would like to offer ourselves to make sure that the people of Zimbabwe continue to receive and access basic health services. We would like to invite all the nurses around and those in the diaspora to come forward and join us in this endeavor to work for the provision of health to all citizens. We are requesting the civic society,International community, allied health professionals to support our strife in restoring sanity to the most crucial sector of society. We will be carrying out medical outreaches to attend to those in the outline areas and to provide immunization services to the millions of children who can no longer access these in most government hospitals and clinics.

ZimNAHR is inviting all peace loving Zimbabweans to come forward and declare their wish to have Zimbabwe working again. We are making an online appeal to employers to give reasonable salaries to the few who have remained to serve the people. We appeal to NGOs to come forward and assist our organization in training of members in basic human rights such that when time comes we will all understand the universal declaration of human rights and health for all.

    God bless you Zimbabwe.
