Following the raids of the Zimbabwe Election Support Network (ZESN) offices by members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police, lead by Chief Superintendent Makedenge, the police are reported to have raided on the home of Rindai Chipfunde-Vava, Director of ZESN. The police are insisting that ZESN board members report to the Harare Central Police Station, Law and Order Section today (Friday 25 April) for questioning in connection with allegations of "supporting or assisting any group to overthrow or attempt to overthrow the government by unconstitutional means or usurp the functions of government or to coerce or attempt to coerce the government" under section 22 (2) b of the Criminal Penal Code. The alleged offence warrants at most 20 years imprisonment without the option of a fine if convicted.

The other ZESN board members include, Irene Petras, the Executive Director of Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), Dzikamai Machingura, the Executive Director of Zimbabwe Human Rights Association (ZimRights), Barnabas Mangodza, the Executive Director of Combined Harare Residents Association (CHRA), Jestina Mukoko, the Executive Director of Zimbabwe Peace Project (ZPP), Clever Bere, President, Zimbabwe National Students Union (ZINASU), Dr. Francis Lovemore, Counselling Services Unit, Wellington Mbofana, Civic Education Network, Alois Chaumba, Director, Catholic Commission for Justice and Peace, and Earnest Mudzengi, Director National Constitutional Assembly.

ZLHR strongly urges the police and related authorities to desist from acts of harassment and attacks on legitimate human rights defenders under the guise of enforcing law and order.
