Election Support Network board members face imminent arrest

Following the
raids of the Zimbabwe
Election Support Network (ZESN) offices by members of the Zimbabwe
Republic Police, lead by Chief Superintendent Makedenge, the police
are reported to have raided on the home of Rindai Chipfunde-Vava,
Director of ZESN. The police officers were searching for 'subversive'
materials including desktop computers, laptop computers containing
such.
The police are insisting
that ZESN board members report to the Harare Central Police Station,
Law and Order Section today (Friday 25 April) for questioning in
connection with allegations of "supporting or assisting any
group to overthrow or attempt to overthrow the government by unconstitutional
means or usurp the functions of government or to coerce or attempt
to coerce the government" under section 22 (2) b of the Criminal
Penal Code. The alleged offence warrants at most 20 years imprisonment
without the option of a fine if convicted.
The other ZESN
board members include, Irene Petras, the Executive Director of Zimbabwe
Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR), Dzikamai Machingura, the Executive
Director of Zimbabwe
Human Rights Association (ZimRights), Barnabas Mangodza, the
Executive Director of Combined
Harare Residents Association (CHRA), Jestina Mukoko, the Executive
Director of Zimbabwe
Peace Project (ZPP), Clever Bere, President, Zimbabwe
National Students Union (ZINASU), Dr. Francis Lovemore, Counselling
Services Unit, Wellington Mbofana, Civic Education Network,
Alois Chaumba, Director, Catholic
Commission for Justice and Peace, and Earnest Mudzengi, Director
National
Constitutional Assembly.
ZLHR strongly urges the
police and related authorities to desist from acts of harassment
and attacks on legitimate human rights defenders under the guise
of enforcing law and order.
