  • Information alert 7 - Politically motivated violence continue in the provinces
    Zimbabwe Peace Project
    April 23, 2008

Zimbabwe Peace Project (ZPP) continues to report cases of politically motivated violations in the country's provinces. These cases are unwelcome. Kindly find attached reports obtained from Midlands and Matabeleland North.

    Midlands

ZPP has recorded a group of Zanu PF supporters that are causing untold terror at a Catholic institution namely Driefontein Catholic mission housing a church, two hospitals namely Muonde and Sanatorium, one nurse training school, one Primary school and one Secondary school in Chirumanzu South constituency, Masvingo province. It is reported that every night since the 19th of April individuals are picked up and beaten at the mission. The mission has been reportedly paralysed to a near halt. Zanu PF retired army officers a Shashe and Chiange are carrying a hit list allegedly supplied by the mission primary school headmaster a Mukaramba. It is alleged that Mukaramba could be working under fear or duress. The two mission hospitals Muonde and Sanatorium are currently dysfunctional since the three resident doctors were forced to close. Allegations are that the Doctors may have closed due to their own fear. By yesterday 22 April 2008 a white Swiss Doctor Afhwaneden is believed to have been forced to leave the mission. Dr HT Marimo and Nyika are believed to be hold up in their residence waiting for instructions from head office in Gweru.

In Gweru urban this morning armed police and soldiers are allegedly roving through the city centre inhibiting citizens to stand in groups. It is said people are being told not to stand in threes an order which is said to cause problems as teachers have just been paid and are queuing for their pay checks.

    Matebeleland North

Recounting of votes started in Lupane on Saturday 19 April at 6.30 when it was supposed to start at 8am the same day. Polling Officers engaged in a food protest dispute allegedly caused the delay. MDC walked out in protest following a dispute over the allegations that ballot boxes were tampered with. The process is currently under way. The mood is said to be sombre in the province as armed soldiers are maintaining a heavy presence. The soldier's presence has mainly been recorded in Binga and Mwemba in Hwange East.

The reports trickling in are causing havoc in the provinces and ZPP we urge the authorities to desist from violent tendencies as these are detrimental to the attainment of peace.

    Let Peace Prevail.
