Peace Project
April 10, 2008
Zimbabwe Peace Project
(ZPP) is seriously concerned about reports of harassment, intimidation
and the general unrelenting disregard of the rule of law threatening
to cause the dissolution of peace in our country. We urge Zimbabweans
to act in a collective sense of responsibility towards preserving
peace in the spirit of nationhood.
Below are some incidents
of violence that came to our attention from the provinces in the
last two days.
Mashonaland
East
War veterans
are allegedly causing mayhem in the former strongholds of Zanu PF
that were snatched by MDC in the past harmonised elections. ZPP
Provincial Coordinator reported that four armed war veterans are
allegedly moving around in a new vehicle threatening villagers.
The war veteran's movements have been reported in Meza and
Chikwizo villages in Mudzi South, Nyamuyeruka village in Mutoko
South and Lot village in Mutoko East. The war veterans are said
to be acting in preparation of a runoff and in retribution of the
villager's failure to vote for President Mugabe as resoundingly
as in previous elections. ZPP Provincial Coordinator said the war
veterans are threatening to revive political bases that were used
for torture and rape among other things in the previous elections.
Masvingo
Zanu PF reportedly
removed donated buses designated to constituencies that did not
vote in favour of the ruling party in the harmonised elections.
ZPP Provincial Coordinator reported that the buses were donated
by the Reserve Bank to the provinces at the height of President
Mugabe's election campaign. One of the routes that suffered
was the Zaka-Masvingo route. The donated buses are reportedly currently
plying the Masvingo-Chivi route and return. Chivi voted for Zanu
PF. Villagers in the affected routes are reportedly stranded and
pensive not knowing what will happen.
Zanu PF supporters
reportedly led by known War Veterans reportedly invaded Mitchell
farm in Masvingo Central, Boland Farm in Masvingo West, Godard Farm
in Masvingo North and Dodderier Farm in Masvingo Central. ZPP Provincial
Coordinator reported that the police ordered war veterans from invaded
farms but they had been no reports of arrests of those that had
already invaded farms.
Manicaland
War Veterans
are threatening to invade New Year's Gift tea estate owned
by a Zimbabwean tea brand Tanganda in Chipinge Central.
Reports of Reserve bank donated buses being removed from regular
routes linking villagers with provincial centres have been reported
in Chimanimani, Chipinge, Nyanga and some parts of Bocha in Manicaland
province. The buses were allegedly removed at the instigation of
the ruling party that allegedly wants to punish those that voted
for the MDC.
Midlands
Two known soldiers
are wrecking havoc in Zhombe, visiting households of those that
are known to have campaigned for MDC harassing them and threatening
them with unspecified action for having voted for the opposition.
Let Peace Prevail.
