Currently much
attention is focused around Ghana where African civil society Organisations
have been meeting in preparation for the 41st Session of the African
Commission on Human and Peoples' Rights (ACHPR) opening on
Wednesday 16.05.07. Today, 14.05.07, the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO
Forum presented the NGO resolution on Zimbabwe which was adopted
unopposed this afternoon. You may download this document by clicking
on the links above.
During the 41st
session of the ACHPR the Government of Zimbabwe will present its
State Party Report. This report addresses measures taken by the
Government of Zimbabwe to implement provisions of the African Charter
from 1996 up to May 2006. It also responds to a number of recommendations
made by the ACHPR fact finding mission to Zimbabwe in June 2002
following allegations of violations of human rights by the Government
of Zimbabwe. This State Party Report can be read on the ACHPR web
site here:
A range of Zimbabwean civil society organisations
have collaborated to produce a Shadow Report to the State Party
Report. Tafadzwa Mapfumo, the Head of the Public Interest Unit at
the Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum will present this Shadow Report
at a press conference tomorrow in Accra at the International Press
Centre at 3.00pm. We will keep you updated on these events as they
unfold over the next few days
The Pan-African
Parliament (PAP) currently meeting for its 7th Ordinary Session
in South Africa has adopted
a resolution on Zimbabwe on Friday 11.05.07. We attach the motion
moved by Inkatha Freedom Party MP Suzanne Vos (South Africa) and
seconded by Boyce Sebetela MP (Botswana). Despite an attempt by
Zimbabwean ZANU PF MPs to allege external forces as the cause for
the Zimbabwe crisis, the Parliament voted 149 for the motion, 20
against and 3 abstentions. The resoloution recommends that a PAP
delegation be sent to Zimbabwe on a fact finding mission and report
back to the plenary.
In their
statement, The Botswana Civil Society Coalition On Zimbabwe
(BOCISCOZ) commends the reported decision taken by the Pan-African
Parliament to establish a body to investigate the deteriorating
human rights situation in Zimbabwe. BOCISCOZ acknowledge the role
of MP Mr. Boyce Sebetela who supported the motion. They also call
for serious engagement by SADC, and its appointed liaison President
Thabo Mbeki, with the Government of Zimbabwe in holding law enforcement
accountable for this behaviour.
