Minnesota Advocates for Human Rights expresses grave concern regarding
the recent illegal arrests and detentions of Mr. Andrew Makoni and
Mr. Alec Muchadehama, prominent attorneys and members of Zimbabwe
Lawyers for Human Rights. Minnesota Advocates stands with Zimbabwe
Lawyers for Human Rights in condemning the recent actions of the
police in denying the two detained attorneys access to counsel or
visitors, and in defying an order from the High Court of Zimbabwe
which required the release of these two human rights defenders.
The mission of Minnesota
Advocates for Human Rights is to implement international human rights
standards to promote civil society and reinforce the rule of law.
Minnesota Advocates is an international non-governmental organization
that investigates and exposes human rights violations; represents
immigrants and refugees in our community who are victims of human
rights abuses; trains and assists groups that protect human rights;
and works through education and advocacy to engage the public and
policy-makers about human rights and cultural understanding. Minnesota
Advocates also holds Special Consultative Status with the United
Nations. We are proud to share these values with Zimbabwe Lawyers
for Human Rights.
Minnesota Advocates
for Human Rights calls on the government of Zimbabwe, in particular
the Commissioner of Police, the Minister of Home Affairs and all
police officers, to immediately comply with the valid order of the
High Court of Zimbabwe and release Mr. Makoni and Mr. Muchadehama.
Moreover, Minnesota Advocates demands assurances from these same
officials that reprisals against human rights defenders shall cease
and that the safety and personal integrity of individuals such as
Mr. Makoni and Mr. Muchadehama, who are committed to advancing democracy
and human rights in Zimbabwe, shall be protected in the future as
required under international law.
Sincerely,
Robin Phillips
Executive Director
