Update on arrested nurses
Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR)
February 07, 2007

Four nurses who were arrested last Thursday 1 February 2007 were yesterday released on free bail at the Harare Magistrates' Court following representations made on Monday 5 February 2007 by their legal practitioner, ZLHR member Charles Kwaramba.

Initially the nurses had been charged under sections of the Public Order and Security Act (POSA) which had been repealed. Mr. Kwaramba made an application for removal from remand based on the faulty charges, but the Magistrate allowed the state representatives to amend the charges. The nurses were subsequently charged under section 37(1) of the Criminal Law Codification Act, allegedly for inciting their colleagues from Parirenyatwa Hospital to join the ongoing strike action.

The nurses have been remanded to 21 February 2007. Further updates on various cases shall follow shortly.
