Students arrested in Masvingo
Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR)
November 08, 2006

Masvingo 08 November 2006
More than 16 students have been arrested in Masvingo following demonstrations against the imposition of exorbitant fees by the government of Zimbabwe through the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education. The new fee structure has made it difficult, if not impossible to hundreds of students to register with the universities, poly technics and teacher’s colleges, which has been viewed to be inimical to the right to education which every other Zimbabwean regardless of economic background is entitled to. Student organisations and social justice activists have vowed to defy such through peaceful civil disobedience and legal challenges. At present lawyers are attending to the student activists, with more being rounded up by the police.

Harare 07 November 2006

The student leadership at UZ is wanted for interrogation by Law and Order Section Harare Central as well as Avondale Police Station, lawyers will accompany them during working hours tomorrow.
