Beatings
and arrest of NCA activists
Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR)
November 01, 2006
University
of Zimbabwe
At around 1500hrs Tafadzwa Mugabe Project Lawyer Human Rights
Defenders and Public Interest Litigation at ZLHR attended to the
University of
Zimbabwe with Tineyi Mukwewa, SEC President and ZLHR Intern
with a view to collecting his suspension letter and getting an understanding
of the charges that are being leveled against him.
Upon arrival
the University of Zimbabwe Security Guards were as usual quite unhelpful
and promised that the ZRP (Avondale) was coming to collect Tineyi
as they held instructions to detain him on behalf of ZRP. Lawyer
Tafadzwa then had to offer to go and collect the ZRP so the police
can get on with their investigations and interrogation of Tineyi
in the presence of his lawyer. Upon arrival at Avondale Police Station
the Investigating Officer (I/O) in the matter with nearly the whole
Station were rather excited and all on their way out, guns blazing
etc, as it appeared that there was some action in their territory.
As a result they refused to attend to Tineyi's matter ahead of this
task. The I/O, one Assistant Inspector Kadonzvo indicated that we
would be able to proceed to do the paper work tomorrow morning.
As of now Tineyi is in custody at Avondale Police Station.
Harare Polytechnic
In
another matter, Tafadzwa Mugabe attended this morning at Harare
Polytechnic College where there was a hearing for the SEC President
of the Harare Polytechnic Tawanda Gumbie. The hearing was a disaster
as the Committee erroneously believed that the lawyer was only supposed
to be an observer of the proceedings and not say anything. Objections
to this procedure were all overruled to the extent that we opted
to have the matter decided on the papers. A written statement to
the charges had been prepared which was sufficient for answering
the charges. Be that as it may we expect a guilty verdict as usual
since the Committee was determined to proceed with the hearing without
offering the defence the opportunity to submit its arguments. An
application to set aside the proceedings is prepared.
