Consultative
meeting between Civic Society and the Government of Zimbabwe
Zimbabwe Human Rights NGO Forum
October 05, 2006
From the 21st
to the 23rd of September 2006, the Harare Office of UNDP facilitated
a consultative meeting between the Government of Zimbabwe and NGOs
under the auspices of NANGO.
The objective of the meeting was to discuss the framework for the
creation of a Human Rights Commission in Zimbabwe. The meeting discussed
and agreed to follow the Paris Principles as the guiding principles
or benchmark for the development of the Zimbabwe Human Rights Commission.
The participants openly and honestly discussed the Government and
CSOs perspectives on the historical and prevailing human rights
environment in Zimbabwe and the rationale for establishing the proposed
National Human Rights Commission. The meeting also deliberated on
the context and nature of CSOs and Government relationships with
a view to identifying the problem areas and making proposals for
the improvement of such relationships in ensuring an environment
that is conducive for continued collaboration between Government
and CSOs.
