The Zimbabwe Human Rights Association unconditionally and unreservedly condemns the shameful brutality suffered by the members and leadership of the Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions at the hands of the state’s law enforcement agents on 13 September 2006.

Freedom of expression and association are God-given entitlements that no state should ever attempt to curtail in a true democracy, either through brutal or other means.

Article 8 of the International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, to which Zimbabwe is a signatory, provides that State Parties shall undertake to ensure the right to strike.

It is hoped, and indeed expected, that the perpetrators of this shameful act, and their principals, will be brought to book. Justice must not only be done, but must be seen to be done.
