Zimbabwe
Lawyers for Human Rights (ZLHR)
August 17, 2006
On the 17th
of August 2006, Wellington Chibebe the Secretary General of the
ZCTU
appeared at Mbare Magistrates Court in the company of his lawyer
Mr Alec Muchadehama of Mbidzo Muchadehama and Makoni. He was charged
with contravening section 176 of the
Criminal Law
(Codification and Reform) Act [chapter 9:23 which states
that "Any person who assaults or by violent means resists a
peace officer acting in the course of his or her duty, knowing that
he or she is a peace officer or realising that there is a risk or
possibility that he or she is a peace officer, shall be guilty of
assaulting or resisting a peace officer and liable to a fine not
exceeding level twelve or imprisonment for a period not exceeding
ten years or both". He was granted ZWD 2000 bail and the trial
date has been set for the 4th of September 2006.
Once again ZLHR
is concerned at the continued levels of persecution of human rights
defenders, trade unionists and legitimate political activists under
the guise of prosecution and the use of the recently promulgated
Codification Act which imposes unparalleled sentences and fines
on previously non grievous offences.
