In commemorating
The International Human Rights Day, Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights
joins other like minded Zimbabweans and organisations both within
and outside Zimbabwe to call upon the Government of Zimbabwe to
mobilise commitment and resources towards access to Anti Retroviral
Treatment for People Living with HIV and AIDS (PLWHA).
It is an undeniable
truth that access to treatment is a basic human right. The WHO reported
that only 20 000 out of estimated 290 000 that require treatment
are on Anti Retroviral Therapy (ART). The tiny group of PLHA on
treatment report that in the past few weeks the country has run
out of ARVS and a drug resistant HIV and AIDS strain is in the offing
owing to interruption of treatment. This in our view is a manifestation
of a health delivery system that has failed in promoting human rights.
Immediate attention from the Government of Zimbabwe is required.
ZLHR also wishes
to remind every Zimbabwean that they have a duty to protect and
promote human rights. We also reiterate the need to promote the
right to shelter and human dignity and take this opportunity to
call upon the Government of Zimbabwe to cater for the victims of
Operation Murambatsvina by providing decent accommodation to those
who have been made homeless and allowing unimpeded access to communities
in need by humanitarian and human rights groups.
