Soldiers victimised in Gweru
Zimbabwe Peace Project (ZPP)
May 13, 2005

The uniformed forces are said to have been caught up in a wave of political tension following reports that some soldiers in the Air Force of Zimbabwe (AFZ) are either being threatened with job losses or suspension for expressing political view that are in contrast with their superiors'.

Information reaching the ZPP has it that in one case, SN (ID number provided), a former soldier in the AFZ who was 'discharged' from the force on July 1 2004 on allegations of supporting the MDC has been reportedly receiving constant threats from the force after he spurned an 'offer' to reinstate him in the force by a Wing Commander MN and a Squadron leader only identified as M.

SN, who at one time was allegedly assaulted in January this year by suspected ruling party supporters was said to be in hiding after he reported the alleged assault to Senga Police (case number CR323-01-05) who were said to have done nothing to investigate the matter.

Six Zanu PF youths led by MG, MN and DM, allegedly working on the instructions of unnamed AFZ officials reportedly fell upon the said victim just before the elections in March and allegedly broke his arms in the attack.

The victim, who is reported to be under specialist treatment is said to be getting help from well-wishers in the city and is living at an undisclosed location.

According to reports, some soldier whe are suspected to be MDC sympathisers have been threatened with job losses for their activities.
