Response to Sunday Mail article July 11, 2004
Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights (ZADHR)
July 12, 2004

Dear Colleagues and Members,

You may have seen the attached article on the front page of The Sunday Mail (Zimbabwe) July 11th 2004.

The article is accurate in stating that Dr Douglas Gwatidzo and Dr Gregory Powell, executive members of the Zimbabwe Association of Doctors for Human Rights (ZADHR) have written to the Zimbabwe Medical Association (ZiMA) requesting that an additional clause be added to the ZiMA constitution.

"To work with the Government of Zimbabwe and members of civil society to ensure that all Zimbabweans enjoy access to an adequate standard of health care and that their rights as defined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and in particular their right to protection against all forms of torture and abuse, are respected."

The article is also accurate in stating that this proposed clause has been tabled for discussion, and proposed adoption, at the Mashonaland Branch of ZiMA AGM on Wednesday July 14th 2004. ZiMA's constitution requires that matters to be added to the agenda at the national ZiMA AGM are put forward by one of the provincial branch meetings.

The same constitutional amendment was passed overwhelmingly at the Mashonaland Branch AGM in 2003. However the matter was discussed but not voted on, at the 2003 national ZiMA AGM, because ZiMA Midlands Branch had not received notice from the ZiMA National Executive on the proposed amendment.

The article is inaccurate in stating that ZADHR has applied in 2004 for affiliation to ZiMA.

The article is also inaccurate in the implication that ZADHR was instrumental in compiling the African Union's Commission on Human and People's Rights (ACHPR) report , which is based on findings prepared by a visiting team of Human Rights experts selected by the African Union (AU) during 2002 (Financial Gazette July 8th 2004).  ZADHR only came into existence at its Inaugural Meeting November 23rd 2002.

ZADHR supports the above proposed constitutional amendment and encourages all ZiMA Mashonaland branch members who also support this proposed amendment to attend the meeting this week on Wednesday and vote in its support.
