Statement
to mark the UN International Day in Support of the Victims of Torture
Centre for
the Rehabilitation of Torture Victims (CERETOV)
June 20, 2004
The Centre for
the Rehabilitation of Torture Victims (CERETOV) joins the rest of
the world in commemorating the United Nations International Day
in Support of Victims of Torture Day on 26 June 2004. This day was
earmarked by the International Community to unite people of the
world against torture and to stop the practice.
CERETOV, an
organisation formed by torture victims who include Charles Mutama,
Job Sikhala, Taurayi Magaya and many others condemns the rise in
torture perpetrated on innocent citizens of Zimbabwe and calls on
the government to take urgent action against the perpetrators.
CERETOV has
lined up activities on Friday 25 June to mark the United Nations
International Day in Support of Victims of Torture Day. A peaceful
march has been organised in Harare. Scores of people are expected
to march from Town House to Africa Unity Square where renowned speakers
will address the gathering.
CERETOV appeals
to all Human Rights Organisations, the Diplomatic Community, Government
Departments, Private Companies, Political Parties and individuals
to join hands in fighting torture by attending this peaceful march.
It is the duty
of all Zimbabweans to ensure that peace and democracy prevail in
this country. Torture in Zimbabwe and the world at large must be
condemned.
