Arrest
of Mr Gabriel Shumba
Legal Resources
Foundation (LRF)
January
15, 2003
The Trustees
of the Legal Resources Foundation (LRF) confirm the arrest of Gabriel
Shumba, a legal practitioner of the Public Interest Unit of the
LRF, at approximately midnight on 14 January 2003. He was able to
inform colleagues that he was at St Mary's Police Station but believed
he would be moved.
Subsequently,
on the morning of 15 January 2003, it was established that he was
at Matapi Police Station where he was permitted to see another colleague
from the Public Interest Unit.
The charges
against Mr Shumba, a human rights activist, are not known at this
time but an urgent Chamber Application is being made for his release.
Neither has he been brought to court for initial remand.
During the period
of his incarceration, he did not have access to food or water until
his colleague provided this at approximately 11.30am on 15 January
2003.
This is a matter
of grave concern to the Trustees of the LRF .
