Arrest of Dr Lovemore - Amani Trust
Legal Resources Foundation (LRF)
August 30, 2002

The Legal Resources Foundation (LRF) is shocked and dismayed at the wanton arrest of Dr Frances Lovemore of the Amani Trust on allegations of disseminating false information under the notorious Public Order and Security Act.

The LRF reiterates the widely-held view that this pernicious law is contrary to constitutionally-enshrined human rights and freedoms and to internationally accepted norms and standards, particularly the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and it must be repealed as it is taking Zimbabweans back to the days of repression, injustice and darkness.

Dr Lovemore’s dedication to her work in providing medical and psychological assistance to victims of torture and violence is well-known. Nor does she produce reports which are not based on fact.

The arrest of Dr Lovemore and the attendant harassment highlight, yet again, the repressive content of the Public Order and Security Act which flies in the face of true justice. The LRF is convinced that this law has no place in a civilised society.
