Statement by Mashonaland Trustees of Amani
Amani Trust
January 28, 2002
The Amani Trust is
a non-profit making, humanitarian organisation that has worked tirelessly
for several years to alleviate the suffering of Zimbabwean victims of
violence.
Regrettably, The Herald and The Sunday Mail media have been conducting
a virulent propaganda campaign against the Amani Trust in which a series
of entirely false and defamatory allegations have been made against Amani.
Some of the numerous allegations are these:
- Amani is illegally
channelling foreign funding to the MDC;
- Amani's safe houses
-
- are "killer
houses" that house "terrorist elements" who use them as bases to
perpetrate acts of political violence;
- are being used
to house persons who have perpetrated acts of violence and who are
fugitives from justice;
- are being used
to torture "several Zanu (PF) supporters" and conduct covert operations
against Zanu (PF);
- Amani is supporting
terrorism;
- Amani is using
propaganda to fuel ethnic hatred and division throughout Zimbabwe.
All these allegations
are completely untrue and baseless. Amani does not channel foreign funds
to political parties; it does not shelter fugitives from justice; it does
not provide bases for persons to commit acts of violence; it does not
spread ethnic hatred. Although the Amani Trust has repeatedly refuted
the allegations, these newspapers continue to publish false stories about
the Trust and the Amani Trust has been left with no choice but to defend
its reputation by instructing its lawyers to institute legal proceedings
for defamation against these newspapers. We have been informed that Mr
Reeler, who has been a particular target for defamatory allegations by
the newspapers, has instructed his lawyers to institute legal
action for damages in his personal capacity.
For the record we would like once again to set out the true facts about
Amani. The Amani Trust was first established in November 1993. The Trust
is a non-partisan organization with no affiliation to any political party.
Its main function is to render assistance to victims of organized violence.
The Amani Trust has
provided assistance to liberation fighters who suffered injury and trauma
as a result of fighting in the Liberation War. It provided testimony to
the Chidyausiku Commission in 1997 on the plight of torture victims, and
received formal appreciation from the Commission for its efforts. The
Trust has had a long relationship with various Government Ministries,
and, in particular, the Ministry of Health, where several hundred health
workers have been provided with training and supervision in trauma counselling.
It has also provided assistance to victims of the violence during the
1980s. Presently it is providing assistance to victims of political violence.
Amani cares for all
victims of organised violence who approach it for assistance, immaterial
of their political affiliation. It provides medical assistance to the
victims. It arranges for medical treatment for their physical injuries
and provides psychological therapy for the mental trauma caused by their
injuries. Amani's team of highly competent and compassionate medical staff
have performed these functions with great dedication. Despite the emotional
strain involved in treating large numbers of victims, many of whom are
badly injured, the medical team has remained resilient and deeply caring.
Without Amani Trust many of these victims would have gone without medical
assistance. The Trustees are proud of the work being done by all the staff
of the Amani Trust and they deplore attempts to depict care-givers as
being supporters of terrorism.
The Trust has also provided temporary accommodation for victims and their
families who have had to flee from their homes because they have been
the targets of political violence. Many of these have had been brutalised
and have had their homes destroyed. These people were accommodated while
they received medical treatment and rehabilitation. They received weekly
subsistence in the form of basic food rations. No victim was told by any
Amani staff member that they would receive substantial sums of money,
such as the ridiculous figure of $3 million dollars that has been mentioned
in the press. It is entirely untrue that Mr Reeler recently promised victims
that they would now receive $500 000 each.
Those entering these sanctuaries were bound by a series of stringent conditions,
breach of which would lead to eviction from these safe houses. For instance
the occupants agreed not to engage in any political activities during
the time they were staying in the safe houses. Anyone found to have engaged
in any illegal activity or bad behaviour of any sort whilst in a safe
house would immediately be expelled from that house.
Because of the hostile State media campaign against these houses, Amani
decided that it could not longer guarantee the safety of the persons accommodate
in the houses. For this reason, it was forced to take the difficult decision
to close these houses and to request the inhabitants to find alternative
safe accommodation. The reasons for this decision were fully explained
to the victims and they were each given bus fares to allow them to re-locate.
The Amani Trust abhors and utterly condemns all acts of political violence
committed by members of any political party. Time and time again it has
called for leaders of all political parties to ensure that their supporters
do not use violence during political campaigning. It has repeatedly called
for the rigorous, but impartial, application of the law against all perpetrators
of political violence. It strongly believes that forcing people to support
or refrain from supporting the political party of their choice is a negation
of the democratic process.
Like other peace-loving Zimbabweans, the Trustees of Amani Trust would
dearly like to see an end to all political violence. It is their earnest
wish that a time will come soon where Amani's humanitarian services are
no longer needed. It prays for peace and tolerance to prevail in Zimbabwe.

Amani Trust Fanning Political Violence
By a Correspondent.
Organised political violence being carried out by the Movement for
Democratic Change (MDC) hit squads has reached alarming proportions
and until the leadership of these killer cells and their sponsors
are brought to book more lives are bound to be lost during the ongoing
presidential election campaigns.
In previous by-elections, especially in Bikita and Chikomba held last
year, the killer cells were not properly organised and lacked mobility.
The hired youths bussed from Harare and Chikombedzi to these two constituencies
moved in large groups and often took to the mountains after a successful
"kill".
The method and tactics have now changed dramatically following unlimited
funding from purported donors in Western countries.
Apart from being armed, the killer squads are now highly mobile, with
Japanese-manufactured 4x4 Nissan Hard-body-type vehicles the preferred
models. Above all, most have received military training in countries
such as Rwanda and Uganda as revealed recently by local newspapers.
This has now enhanced their capability and precision.
At the forefront in support of the destabilisation programme, which
is aimed at creating anarchy and lawlessness country-wide, is a hitherto
obscure organisation calling itself Amani Trust.
Its director, Tony Reeler, recently went public and announced this
his organisation was closing down the safe houses following disclosures
that the houses were actually being used as torture chambers and bases
by the MDC killer cells.
Despite claims by Reeler that his organisation assists all victims
of political violence regardless of their political affiliation, the
recently closed safe houses funded by his organisation harboured criminals
and
murderers being sought by law-enforcement agencies. It is against
this background that Amani Trust's activities should be looked at
and investigated.
Already some of the criminals facing murder charges have admitted
that they were at one time or another given sanctuary at the safe
houses funded by Amani Trust, which obviously makes Reeler and his
organisation accomplices in acts of terror and mayhem that are being
perpetrated by MDC killer cells.
If at all the safe houses were not being used for purposes other than
that of housing victims of political violence, why were they closed
and presumably relocated hurriedly after disclosures of their location
by the media?
Amani Trust has thrust itself into Zimbabwe's political playground
and, as such, should be made responsible and accountable for all the
nefarious activities surrounding these torture chambers.
For Reeler to pretend that his organisation was not aware or informed
of the presence of rented hooligans at premises hosing his so-called
victims of political violence when, in fact, they are wanted criminals,
is itself a serious criminal offence warranting prosecution.
When the Government enacted a piece of legislation that harmonised
the activities of the NGO's there was an outcry of interference in
their operations and the loudest shouts of all came from Tony Reeler's
Amani Trust. It's high time all NGOs were reminded that no matter
how much they try to hide their clandestine activities the long arm
of the law will eventually catch up with them.
By pretending to heal the wounds of those who suffered during the
Matabeleland disturbances, Amani Trust is once again fanning ethnic
divisions and hatred. The organisation has taken it upon itself to
be he
judge and the jury deciding when and how the victims should be compensated.
It is such warped thinking that otherwise renders pertinent objectives
expounded by NGOs doubtful. Exposure of Amani Trust's not so charitable
activities also to rest calls by NGOs to be involved in the voter
education campaign. Amani Trust, but its actions has declared itself
a political opponent of the Government. The organisation can no longer
be allowed to participate in civic affairs, let alone to be given
the responsibility to conduct an impartial voters education campaign.
Suggestions by the MDC that NGOs should be allowed to conduct voter
education campaigns are therefore insipid and should not be taken
seriously. Currently some of them are being used as conduits for huge
amounts of money earmarked for the MDC's presidential campaign while
others are already under investigation under the Political Finances
Act, which prohibits foreign funding of Zimbabwe's political parties.
Periodic reports submitted by the NGOs to their countries form the
basis of vilifying the Zimbabwe Government policies on the international
foray. No wonder why the European Union is always caught with its
pants down whenever discussions on the ongoing land reform programme
take place.
A typical lie being peddled by the NGOs is this land is being redistributed
to Zanu-PF card-carrying members only. A simple perusal of the recipients'
list will, on the contrary, reveal that hundreds of MDC card-carrying
members and their officials have benefited from the programme.
Recently SADAC leaders expressed concern over what they termed blatant
interference by some NGO's in the internal affairs of African states
under the guise of initiating development projects.
The leaders urged the NGOs to stick to their brief rather than try
to influence political events in member countries.
The only option left for the Government is to strike off Amani Trust
from its register of NGOs as its activities have shown beyond reasonable
doubt that they do not confirm to that of a genuine NGO but rather
a political opponent bent on dividing the nation.
It is also within the confines of Zimbabwe's laws to demand from Amani
Trust names and identity particulars of all those given sanctuary
at these torture houses. This will help law enforcement agencies solve
the numerous politically motivated violence cases still outstanding
in their records.
