SAfAIDS awarded 2013 NANGO award
Southern
Africa HIV and AIDS Information Dissemination Service (SAfAIDS)
March 26, 2013
SAfAIDS is the
2013 recipient of the National
Non Governmental Organisations (NANGO) award for Excellence
in the fight against HIV/AIDS. To celebrate this prestigious award,
SAfAIDS yesterday hosted a cocktail event to celebrate the award
with its Board, Donors, Funders, Partners and SAfAIDS regional staff
from its country offices. SAfAIDS has been running various programmes
targeted at addressing sexual and reproductive health and rights
(SRHR), HIV and tuberculosis (HIV).
Based in Harare,
(Zimbabwe), with country offices in Pretoria (South Africa), Lusaka
(Zambia), Manzini (Swaziland), and Maputo (Mozambique), SAfAIDS
has been implementing programmes for the last 15 years in Lesotho,
Malawi, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa, Swaziland, Tanzania,
Zambia, and Zimbabwe.
The celebratory
event strongly articulated the work that SAfAIDS is doing in the
region with different groups of people as children, young women
and men, traditional leaders and marginalised groups. Speaking at
the event, Mrs Lois Chingandu, SAfAIDS Executive Director said,
SAfAIDS is a centre of excellence and it is a great honour to be
recognised by NANGO for the work that we are doing. We shall continue
working hard to address SRHR, HIV and TB through advocacy, communication
and social mobilisation.
SAfAIDS is set
apart for the impact on young women, young people and communities
through work that seeks to create equity in access to health services.
Through the Changing Rivers Flow SAfAIDS has been working with Chiefs
to address cultural issues that hinder access to health services.
The NANGO award is given to recognise great efforts in addressing
HIV and AIDS. SAfAIDS has a dynamic team that is doing great work
and as NANGO we selected it for this award to appreciate the difference
that the organisation is making within the Southern Region, said
Dr. Zinhumwe, NANGO Chief Executive Officer.
Watershed College
choir and Pierra Makondora entertained the guests through music
and Princess Sibanda delivered an inspiring piece of poetry. A special
thank you goes to all our donors and implementing partners that
enable us to deliver and be efficient in our work through their
continued support. We shall continue to strive to realise our vision
which is to ensure that all people in Africa realize their sexual
and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) and are free from the
burden of HIV, TB and other related developmental health issues.
SAfAIDS is humbled
and motivated to do more work and to continue being a centre of
excellence!
