Response
to Daily News article 'RBZ in trouble'
Zimbabwe
AIDS Network (ZAN)
December 06,
2011
Zimbabwe AIDS
Network (ZAN) secretariat, membership at large and their legal practitioners
wish to categorically dissociate themselves from the newspaper article,
entitled "RBZ in Trouble" which appeared as main headline
on the front page of the Daily News on Tuesday 6th December 2011.
The statement
is factually incorrect in all respects and is misleading in that
the political inferences to link the pending litigation are malicious,
incorrect and were intended to unduly sensationalize a matter which
is sub judice.
For the record
and avoidance of doubt;
- The intended
purpose for the funds has been incorrectly stated. The funds were
programme funds to support implementation of HIV and AIDS projects;
they were not intended to go directly to PLHIV, incorrectly referred
to as AIDS patients.
- ZAN has no
knowledge whatsoever of the purpose for which its funds allegedly
held by the RBZ were utilized and no averments in this regard
have been made directly or indirectly in the court papers.
- There is
no reference to a particular officer within ZAN interviewed to
supply information to the reporter and we can confirm that no
verification was done with Zimbabwe AIDS Network
- Zimbabwe
AIDS Network is apolitical, non-partisan and is not involved in
political activities of any nature
Civil society
calls on all media to report ethically, professionally and responsibly
with due verification of information before publication.
ZAN therefore
calls on the Daily News to publicly retract the story and apologize
to ZAN, RBZ and all persons directly or indirectly referred to in
the story in question, giving the same retraction and apology the
same prominence accorded to this misleading story.
