The appointment of gospel sensation Fungisai Zvakavapano-Mashavave to the National Aids Council as a board member is a clear demonstration of Government's efforts to involve artistes in the fight against HIV and Aids.

Speaking about her appointment, the musician who has shown a keen interest in HIV and Aids issues through songs like Pindirai Mwari - which condemns infidelity among couples - said she would use her role as an artist to raise awareness among artistes about the pandemic.

"I really feel excited and honoured to be given such an opportunity to work with respectable people and given such a responsibility," she said.

As part of the board, Zvakavapano-Mashavave would be expected to develop sustainable strategies in the fight against HIV and Aids, mobilise resources, enhance the capacity of communities in prevention against the pandemic, monitor and promote research among other duties.

Asked if she was ready for the mammoth challenge, the singer said she was willing to tackle her new role in the society and she will use her career as a gospel musician to influence the reduction of HIV prevalence rate in the country.

"I am gladly willing to learn and help people given this new role I have been given in the society," said the gospel diva.

She added that she would execute her duties diligently, saying she had an obligation to society.

"I am ready to carry out research in HIV and Aids issues so that I'm always up to date with current developments and breakthroughs," she said.

She urged youths to practice abstinence until marriage and encouraged married couples to be faithful to each other, as this would play a big role in combating the pandemic.

Zvakavapano-Mashavave, Victor Kunonga and Pastor G are Goodwill Ambassadors in the local chapter of the Global Call to Action against Poverty.
