Whilst we applaud the
passage of the Domestic Violence Act, Zimbabwe Exiles Forum (ZEF)
is concerned that in most instances in Zimbabwe, violence against
women is perpetrated at the behest of the State. The machinery that
has been used to target political opponents and Human Rights Defenders
includes the Army, police, ruling party military (Green Bombers)
and the ZANU PF youths.
ZEF notes with added
concern that the worse economic and political situation in Zimbabwe
continues to force women and children to flee into exile. Many of
these women have been subjected to extreme poverty, sexual molestation
and other abuses in South Africa, Botswana and other neighbouring
countries. HIV/AIDS is also on the rise amongst the exiled Zimbabwean
women, who do not have access to ARVs and medical care while in
exile.
ZEF hopes that the SADC-initiated
political settlement will herald as a matter of urgency, a new Zimbabwe
that respects the rule of law, democracy and human rights.
