The European
Union's executive commission on Thursday announced 15 million euros
(20 million dollars) in humanitarian aid to vulnerable communities
in Zimbabwe.
The money will
be spent on emergency food and farming programmes as well as water
sanitation, and is aimed at benefitting displaced people, HIV/AIDS
victims, orphans and other vulnerable children, the commission said.
"The European
Commission is committed to providing humanitarian aid to the most
vulnerable Zimbabweans, regardless of the political situation there,"
said EU aid commissioner Louis Michel.
Last month EU
foreign ministers extended for a year sanctions, including an arms
embargo, against Zimbabwe in protest against the authoritarian regime
of Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe.
