Call for nominations: Auxillia Chimusoro Awards 2003
Zimbabwe HIV/AIDS Policy and Advocacy Project (ZAPA)
January 23, 2003

The Futures Group Zimbabwe is a branch of The Futures Group International (TFGI) an international development organization in HIV/AIDS policy and advocacy, and civil society participation. Futures Group Zimbabwe is the implementing agency for the Zimbabwe AIDS Policy and Advocacy (ZAPA) project, a four-year USAID funded programme whose goal is to help mitigate the impact of the HIV/AIDS crisis in Zimbabwe. The ZAPA project seeks to break the silence, strengthen policy formulation and scale up advocacy efforts to effectively address HIV/AIDS in Zimbabwe.

ZAPA will this year present the Auxillia Chimusoro Award to an organisation or individual for outstanding efforts in mitigating the impact of HIV/AIDS in Zimbabwe. The award, funded by USAID, is given in honour of Auxillia Chimusoro, the first person in Zimbabwe to openly disclose her HIV positive status in 1989, a time when HIV/AIDS was denied.

Auxillia worked effortlessly to demystify HIV/AIDS through public talks and care and support initiatives for the infected and affected. Her advocacy work is well recognised in Zimbabwe after having founded the first HIV/AIDS support group in Harare. She established more than 50 support groups in both rural and urban communities throughout Zimbabwe before she died in 1998.

Past winners of the prestigious Auxillia Chimusoro Award include Southern Africa AIDS Information Dissemination Service (SAfAIDS), popular musician Oliver Mutukudzi, and the New Start Centre initiative in 2002. Prior to that, journalist Andrew Mutandwa won the award for his excellence in reporting on HIV/AIDS in Zimbabwe’s weekly newspaper, the Financial Gazette.

ZAPA invites nominations for individuals, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), AIDS Service Organisations (ASOs), Community-based Organisations (CBOs) or corporate institutions that have excelled in HIV/AIDS awareness, prevention, research, care and support programmes in Zimbabwe for this year’s awards ceremony to be held in March 2003. All nominees must have contributed in a sustained way towards the response to the HIV/AIDS crisis in Zimbabwe.

To nominate an individual/organisation/corporation for the awards, please fill out the nomination slip, cut and paste your response to:
