Day of the Girl Child - Early child marriages, a hindrance to the
education of the girl child
Students and Youth Working on Reproductive Health Action Team
(SAYWHAT)
October 11, 2012
Today the 11th
of October 2012, SAYWHAT with the rest of the world commemorates
the Day of the Girl Child. As SAYWHAT, we believe that to liberate
the girl child from discrimination and marginalisation education
should be prioritised rather than early marriages. Education does
not only open doors for career opportunities, but it is the corner
stone to independency and freedom from patriarchal tendencies that
have made women vulnerable to sexual and reproductive health challenges.
We appreciate the role that our girls play as daughter, sisters,
mothers and wives but through education we know that we broaden
their horizons into being leaders in business, politics and the
civil society.
Educating girls
and young women emancipates them and gives them a better chance
to access resources, attain economic independence and in the process
raise their social status. Education is the most powerful tool for
empowering the girl child and educating the girl child is educating
the nation. Stop Early Marriages Now and Educate the Girl Child!
