Hospital asks patients to provide own linen
The Chronicle (Zimbabwe)
May 16, 2006

PATIENTS at Gweru provincial hospital are being asked to bring their own blankets due to a critical shortage of linen at the health institution, Chronicle has learnt.

A source at the hospital said hospital authorities have been asking patients to bring their own linen for the past month.

"Patients are being asked to bring their own linen to the hospital when they are admitted as the hospital does not have adequate linen for patients.

"The other reason why patients are being asked to bring their own linen is that hospital authorities do not want to incur a huge laundry bill," she said.

Efforts to get a comment from the Midlands Provincial Medical Director, Dr Anderson Chimusoro were fruitless as he was said to be out of the office.

The Deputy Minister of Health and Child Welfare, Dr Edwin Muguti, said the Government was not aware that patients were being asked to bring their own linen but said management at the hospital should address the problem expeditiously.

"We do not want to hear about such things taking place in hospitals. The provincial medical director and management at the hospital should deal with this matter as quickly to avoid inconveniencing patients," he said.

In March, the Government expressed concern over the way the hospital was being run saying there was need to replace senior managers at the hospital.
