NGO
opens health centre in Tsholotsho

A non-governmental
organisation, Medecins Sans Frontieres, has opened an opportunistic
infections clinic at Tsholotsho District Hospital.
MSF’s programmes officer, Miss Fernanda Falero, said the clinic
would provide treatment to people in the district affected by HIV
and AIDS.
"Now the
people of Tsholotsho have their own centre that has specialists
to deal with opportunistic infections. They do not have to travel
to Bulawayo any more to get treatment," she said.
MSF has also
established Voluntary Counselling and Testing centres at the hospital
and four other clinics in the district.
"Apart
from the VCT services and the Opportunistic Infections Clinic, we
have sent out a team that is now permanently based in Tsholotsho.
This team mainly deals with outreach programmes, peer education
and mobile VCT operations," she said.
Miss Falero
said plans were under way to extend services to all the rural clinics
in the district by the end of the year.
Tsholotsho district
administrator, Mr William Muzamba, said the opportunistic infections
clinic was a welcome development and added that MSF was doing a
remarkable job in Tsholotsho.
"We are
quite overwhelmed by the progress that this organisation and the
Ministry of Health and Child Welfare are bringing to the health
sector in Tsholotsho. We hope to see more NGO’s that work in harmony
with the Government," he said.
He urged other
NGO’s to work together with the Government to ensure development
in rural communities.
Last year, MSF
facilitated the opening of similar clinics at Mpilo Central Hospital
and the United Bulawayo Hospitals.
