Padare
on the move to promote peace and gender equity
Padare/Enkundleni/Men's
Forum on Gender
October 26, 2009
Padare/Enkundleni
Men's Forum on Gender on Friday embarked on a peace marathon
at Mbare's Harare High School. The peace marathon attracted
a number of students at the school and was meant to promote peace
and co-existence between the boys and girls at the school.
Abuse and victimisation
is rampant in schools from both ends and the idea of bringing in
school pupils to participate in these extra curricula activities
is meant to create synergies and co-operation amongst them.
These marathon events
are a follow up to the recommendations of a baseline conducted by
PADARE which require intervention programmes in engaging young boys
in schools on gender justice.
Baseline has
highlighted that there is rampant abuse of the boy child in schools.
Of concern is that many boys do not report about abuse as it is
not deemed "manly " to tell the world that you have been
abused. These are some of the negative perceptions thus the need
to create a culture of openness on abuses on the boy child.
Speaking of
the event, the schools programme Officer, Mr Obert Chigodora said
that the objectives of this iniative is hinged upon encouraging
young boys to see their female counterparts as equal and encouraging
oneness in schools and communities, "We continue to score
significant victories in our efforts to stop violence and other
forms of abuse with the vision of creating a gender just society
where we involve both the boys and girls to see and treat each other
as equal partners" he said.
Mr Mujru, the Schools
Patron for Harare High highlighted that the activity came at the
right opportunity where cases of abuse are still evident the school
engagements.
We will continue working
towards creating a new gender sensitive generation.
