The Anti Domestic Violence Council has been launched today at a local hotel in Harare today.

The Council has brought together stakeholders interested in the fight for gender justice with representatives of the Ministry of Justice, Women Affairs and Gender Development, Health and Child Welfare, Education Department of Social Services, ZRP, Council Of Chiefs, Civic Society and Churches coming together. Members of the council include Mr Kelvin Hazangwe (Padare/Enkundleni), Ms Emilia Muchawa (ZWLA) Mrs Petronella Nyamapfene

The launch kicked off with an overview of the domestic violence act which was well articulated by Ms Sylvia Chirawu who spoke of how useful the domestic violence act has been in trying to address Gender based violence.

Firebrand women rights leader, Ms Emilia Muchawa spoke of the need for government to take the iniative of championing the fight for gender justice with civic society coming in to augment the work of government, citing the clear example of South Africa where civic society and government have partnered well in dealing with domestic violence.

Mr Kelvin Hazangwe outlined the Council's strategic plan for the next three years which has among other things include establishment of an Independent Secretariat by 2010, as well as monitoring the Sexual Offences Act, and the Domestic Violence Act and improving on the gaps of these pieces of Legislation. It was humbling to note that quite a lot of people recognise and appreciate the work that Padare/Enkundleni has been doing and we pledge to continuously work towards the realisation of a gender just Society.
