Seeking
organizations working on gender-based violence
Raising
Voices and UN-Habitat
January 29, 2003
Raising
Voices and UN-Habitat are currently undertaking an extensive field
review of programs in East and Southern Africa working to prevent
gender-based violence (GBV). Currently there is scant information
on the types of programs working to prevent GBV within the regions
and minimal sharing of the successes and challenges organizations
face while implementing GBV programs.
In an effort
to learn about and from NGOs working to prevent GBV, Raising Voices
and UN-Habitat are undertaking a year long project that includes:
- Identifying
successful GBV programs through a comprehensive field review;
- Bringing
key groups together in a regional dialogue to share experiences
and build alliances; and
- Publishing
a ‘best’ practices book which highlights innovative and effective
GBV prevention programs in East and Southern Africa.
Key aims of
the project is to create stronger alliances and partnerships between
NGOs working on GBV prevention in the regions and to create advocacy
tools for promoting greater interest and investment in GBV prevention
programming and for strengthening GBV program design. The publications
that emerge from each of the activities will provide substantial
exposure to participating NGOs. They will be shared with all who
participate as well as regional and international donors, policy-makers,
governments, and other NGOs throughout the world.
If you would
like to participate please take a few moments to complete
the attached questionnaire. We encourage you to add any additional
information or documentation about your work. Feel free to forward
this email to, or contact us about other NGOs or groups that you
know of working on GBV prevention.
