Villagers surviving on wild fruits
Bulawayo Agenda
October 28, 2008

Hwange

Zimbabweans are suffering from a severe food crisis that has seen the closure of many food outlets due to lack of items to sell. As a result most people are surviving on wild fruits. People have become so desperate that they have resorted to eating things that they never considered to be consumable. Food items are sold in foreign currency or exorbitant local prices that are beyond the reach of the majority. The food staffs are not readily available and are only accessible to a few individuals who are fuelling the black market. Currently, most residents of this town rely on substandard mealie-meal which was packed with maize husks. It is alleged that the mealie-meal, which was sold by the owner of a local milling company, had been stored for a long time because the miller did not want to sell a substandard product. Many people do not approve of such a product but were forced to buy it because of limited options.
