Environment
Africa is proud to announce that Canadian EInternational Development
Agency (CIDA) recently awarded project funding for the following
Eafrica proposed Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) of
the Mukuvisi River and its Catchment project.
The project
is the first of its kind in Zimbabwe. There are four major components
in the project: the development of Environmental Management Action
Plans, the creation of environmentally-friendly Waste Management
Programmes, Sustainable Urban Agriculture to improve livelihoods
and activities to restore the river and its catchment. The project
builds upon existing initiatives implemented by Environment Africa
in the Cleveland Catchment area, the Mukuvisi River, Industrial
Clusters, the River Charter and public awareness campaigns.
The overall
goal of the project is to improve the quality of water, by the protection
and management of the water through active involvement of all relevant
stakeholders, in the Mukuvisi River and its catchments.
Project outputs
will be achieved through a phased approach, major objectives being:
- Increased
quantity and protection of biodiversity in the Mukuvisi River
and its Catchment.
- Increased
responsibility and ownership of the Mukuvisi River and its Catchment
by local urban communities in Mabvuku and Tafara.
- Improved
livelihoods in Mabvuku and Tafara through sustainable agricultural
practices.
- Reduced key
stresses on the River system through for example, reduced pollution
from industry, City of Harare sewage, storm water drains and urban
agricultural activities.
Activities of
the project will incorporate gender and HIV/Aids issues. An education
campaign on the importance of water among users along the Mukuvisi
River and its catchments will be undertaken. All in all, the project
will provide a 'model for IWRM' that can be implemented in similar
areas around Zimbabwe. This is good news for Cleveland and for its
local communities.
The project
is a strategic and exciting one with its new concept of Integrated
Water Resources Management, a global trend being implemented locally.
We shall keep you informed on its progress.
