Election Resource Centre set to appear in court on Wednesday, 16
October 2013
Election
Resource Centre
October 15, 2013
The Election
Resource Centre (ERC) will appear before a Harare Magistrate at
Rotten Raw Courts tomorrow at 0830 in Court 4. The organization
and three volunteers are set to stand trial after initially appearing
before the same court on the 2nd of October 2013, following summons
issued in pursuance of alleged contravention of Section 40 (C) of
the Electoral
Act. The section deals with conducting voter education without
authority from the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC).
The charge follows
the arrest and subsequent detention for 2 nights of Farai Saungweme,
Moses Chikora and Wadzanai Precious Nyakudya on the 11th
of May 2013 in Borrowdale as they participated in a
voter mobilization campaign popularly known as X1G. The initiative
was aimed at raising awareness on the need for young people to participate
in electoral processes.
The ERC, which
is being represented by its Director, Tawanda Chimhini and the trio,
Farai Saungweme, Moses Chikora and Wadzanayi Precious Nyakudya,
deny the charges. The trial has failed to start on two occasions
owing to a number of reasons including the unavailability of state
witnesses and the trial schedule of the Magistrate assigned to the
case. The ERC together with the 3 accused persons are being Mr.
Trust Maanda from the Zimbabwe
Lawyers for Human Rights.
