    Introduction

This update provides an analysis of political developments during the period of March to April and their implications for elections in Zimbabwe. The period under review saw Zimbabwe celebrate independence as the country attained 32 years of self-rule. The period also saw the death of Malawi President Bingu Wa Mutharika. Simultaneously, the media during this period was awash with speculations on President Mugabe's ill health and the debate on succession in ZANU PF became more intense.

Observers have reported increased political party activity as parties restructure and conduct district elections in the case of ZANU PF. This increase in political party activity is a clear indication that parties are gearing up for elections.

The Zimbabwe Election Support Network remains dedicated to the promotion of democratic elections in Zimbabwe. In line with this objective, we continue to analyse the political environment in the 210 constituencies where observers are deployed. This update is informed by observations from these constituencies and broadly captures national political developments in Zimbabwe.
