Zimbabwean presidential candidate Simba Makoni has added his voice to growing concerns on delays to announce results of last month's presidential election.

He was speaking for the first time since the election more than 10 days ago. Makoni says the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) has literally closed down operations at its national command centre.

He says like the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), he is in the dark regarding the whereabouts of the presidential election material.

The MDC is seeking a high court order to force the ZEC to declare a winner.

    ZCTU wants Mbeki to act

The Zimbabwean Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) says President Thabo Mbeki should take control of the situation in Zimbabwe.

The union's General-Secretary, Wellington Chibebe, has accused Zanu-PF of being behind the delay of the release of the presidential results.

"It's clear that it is Zanu-PF and nobody else . . . they should allow Mbeki to take charge ... we will always question the impartiality of Mbeki because Mbeki was appointed by President (Robert Mugabe) and he is a player in this whole game ..." says Chibebe.

Chibebe also urged the labour federation's members to remain calm.

Meanwhile, Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa says he plans to stage a Southern African Development Community extraordinary summit to discuss the crisis in Zimbabwe. He says he is consulting with his fellow heads of state and government on holding an extraordinary summit on the situation in Zimbabwe.
