    March 11, 2008

Lupane Centre - President Mugabe addressed a largely unenthusiastic crowd at this dusty capital of Matabeleland North province. He had little to offer except rhetoric particularly aimed at the opposition MDC Tsvangirai and new kid on the block Simba Makoni. He lamented the defection of Dumiso Dabengwa though he spared him the vitriol. The crowd made up of mostly school children baked in the sweltering heat after having waited for hours for the arrival of Mugabe.

The evidently hungry crowd could not be motivated by the usual slogans that punctuated an otherwise dour affair by ZANU PF standards. More details to come.

Sipepa - Tsholotsho - In a 'Meet the Candidates' meeting held Monday 10 March and organized by Tsholotsho Agenda, villagers revealed that in Chief Mathuphula's area, village headmen had started calling meetings during which villagers were being threatened that if they voted for any party other than ZANU PF, they would not get any food. Some villagers also had been told that only ZANU PF supporters would vote on the 29th of March and the rest would vote on the 30th. Villagers in Tsholotsho have complained at the way in which traditional leaders were being used by the ruling party to campaign for them and lamented the politicization of food distribution to the starving masses.
