    Zimbabwe Council of Churches
    February 23, 2008

Zimbabwe is going to the polls on the 29th of March 2008 in a unique election since independence where as a nation we will vote for the Councillors, Members of the House of Assembly, Senators (Members of Parliament) and President, in a single day. The election brings with it high expectations for aspiring candidates and the whole nation.

Bearing in mind the ugly aftermaths of elections in other countries in Sub-Saharan Africa e.g. Kenya; realising that the level of interest from the aspiring candidates, parties, the electorate and even the international community is quite high; noting that the electoral landscape has changed and that participation of the people in different capacities has increased; the Zimbabwe Council of Churches calls upon:

The Government to provide a level playing field for all those seeking political office. Let justice flow like a stream and righteousness like a river that never goes dry (Amos 5:24) All political parties, candidates and their supporters to exercise maturity, tolerance and to seek power only through the ballot. To campaign in a peaceful and honourable way, shun all forms of violence, to observe and encourage peace at all times. The law enforcement agents to execute their duties in an efficient, effective and non partisan way to protect life and property. To apply the law without discrimination or favour, for God hates all forms of injustice. The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission to adhere to the SADC norms and principles and other international best practices in the conduct of our elections. The media as a major stake holder in the election process, to give objective and balanced reports and fair coverage to all political players. To thrive to influence and promote peace. All eligible voters to exercise their democratic right to vote. The nation to seek peace and pursue it and invite all people to come and reason together as we undertake this process of electing our representatives at different levels. Blessed are the peacemakers for they shall be called children of God.(Matthew 5:9) All people of faith to prayerfully promote peace, love, justice and respect for diversity.

As the Zimbabwe Council of Churches we commit ourselves to:

    • Continue calling for divine calmness and unity of purpose for all Zimbabweans.
    • Work together in healing the wounds and making Zimbabwe a great nation once again.
    • Be prophetic in rebuking all forms of injustices from any quarter. Provide pastoral care to those who are in need.
    • Continue to preach peace, love and justice in all our churches more so now and in future.
    • Avail ourselves to actively observe the forthcoming elections.

Finally, we challenge the nation to rise above petty party politics and, in humility and under the guidance of God be constructively engaged in prayer and finding positive approaches to nation building. Let us live in peace and encourage peace as the Lord says "Peace I give to you, my peace I leave with you" (John 14: 27)
