    Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition
    February 09, 2008

Consistent with the organization's mission statement to realize a democratic Zimbabwe, the Crisis in Zimbabwe Coalition would like to inform its members, partners and other pro-democracy organizations that it will run daily and weekly information programmes on the electoral and political environment as the country prepares for the March 29 general election.

The purpose of the two programmes is to inform and share ideas, information and alert members, partners, regional and international audiences on critical events that will be taking place in Zimbabwe before the general election.

In the view of the Coalition, such undertakings will assist to inform critical audiences on the state of affairs in Zimbabwe as it relates to the existence or otherwise of the ingredients required to administer a free and fair electoral process and outcome.

The Coalition will run a daily Election Watch bulletin whose main purpose is to record events taking place as the country prepares for the election.

The idea is to gather as much information as possible that can be used to determine the capacity of the political and civic players to organize a credible election with the premise of the law. It will focus on political campaigns, civic education, media freedoms, political freedoms and an examination on how the repressive state apparatus such as the police, the army and the Central Intelligence Organisation (CIO) operatives conduct themselves in administering democratic polls.

It will also critically look at the activities of political parties and see whether they conduct their business within the limits of the law and international human rights statutes governing the conduct of democratic elections.

Once every Thursday beginning next week, the Coalition will run what it calls The SADC Barometer, where it seeks to examine the State's compliance or otherwise with the SADC guidelines and principles on democratic elections.

The two documents will assist the organization to gather data on the post election report that will help to make an evaluation on how the elections would have been conducted and if they were met the required domestic and international guidelines.
