The Registrar-General's Office will this morning start deploying officers to constituencies and wards in preparation for the commencement of the inspection of the voters' roll that begins tomorrow.

The inspection will run until February 7, about seven weeks before the harmonised elections slated for March 29.

Addressing a Press conference in Harare yesterday, the Registrar-General, Mr Tobaiwa Mudede, said the training and deployment of officers would be done over two days.

"The department will today (yesterday) start the training of officers for deployment in preparation for the commencement of the inspection of the voters' roll for the harmonised presidential, parliamentary, Senate and local government elections that commences on Friday.

"The voters' roll will be laid in the wards that are within a constituency and inspection will run for the next seven days. We are encouraging all those who wish to check on their names on the roll, register or transfer from their constituencies and wards to others to do so," he said.

Mr Mudede said the inspection of the voters' roll would be done at ward level to allow for easier access by voters, which was an improvement from the constituency-based inspection in previous elections.

More than 5 000 centres have been established for the inspection of the voters' roll.

"The increase in the inspection centres is meant to accommodate the changes in which the voters' roll will be inspected. I want people to go and inspect the roll during the inspection period and not wait for an extension as the time left before the elections is short," he said.

Mr Mudede urged those with queries on the voters' roll to direct them to his office before the close of inspection and for persons who have turned 18 to get registered for the forthcoming elections.

The centres will open every day from 7am to 6pm in urban centres and from 7 am to 5pm in rural areas.

The Zimbabwe Electoral Commission has started deploying voter education officers to educate the electorate on the voting system and procedures.

Meanwhile, former Finance Minister Cde Chris Kuruneri is planning a political comeback after the courts cleared him on charges of externalising foreign currency.

Cde Kuruneri will go into battle with Cdes Winnie Muchekesi and Thoko Bhami for the ticket to represent Zanu-PF in Mt Darwin East.

He was once MP in Mazowe.
