  • ZANU PF in retribution campaign in Bindura
    Zimbabwe Peace Project
    April 02, 2005

Barely a day after winning the March 2005 general elections in a landslide victory, the ruling Zanu PF has reportedly launched a retribution campaign against known MDC supporters, or those suspected to have voted for the opposition party.

Investigations by the ZPP can reveal that in Bindura, where Elliot Manyika of Zanu PF won the mandate to represent the constituency in Parliament, scores of people either known to support the MDC or such civic groups like the National Constitutional Assembly (NCA) have been threatened with an array of brutal methods of elimination including death, assault and expulsion.

In one interesting case, GJ, an NCA activist living in Chipadze is said to be living in fear after she refused to be forced to vote for the ruling party. ZPP caught up with her and in an interview yesterday, she revealed that the local Zanu PF leadership (District Committee) in the constituency led by a man only identified as Mashumba and Jonah Ngwenya ‘promised’ to descend on her after the announcement of election results.

Manyika won against Joel Mugariri of the MDC. GJ (39), a mother of 3 (one who is physically challenged), who operates a tuck-shop alleged that she has been ordered to leave Bindura for her outstanding support of the MDC’s parliamentary campaigns. It is also understood that OM, OK and NC from Chipadze high density suburb are also under serious threats of evictions from Zanu PF.

A police report, which was made immediately after Jona Ngwenya and several Zanu PF supporters allegedly besieged GJ’s home chanting slogans denouncing and threatening her, prompted the police to intervene.

The case is understood to have been reported to the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights.
