  • ZANU PF threatens MDC supporters with expulsion in Rusape
    Zimbabwe Peace Project
    April 02, 2005

In an act of intolerance, Zanu PF has allegedly launched a door-to-door ‘witch-hunt’ to weed out MDC supporters who are said to be ‘candidates’ for evictions and expulsions from the small town of Rusape in Makoni East near the eastern border city of Mutare.

This follows poll results that were announced yesterday after a tightly contested parliamentary election in the constituency. Chipanga polled 9201 votes against Pishai Muchauraya (MDC)’s 7708 in what scores of residents in the constituency described as a rigged election.

According to confirmed information just received, Zanu PF youths and war veterans, claiming to be giving the newly elected MP for the constituency Shadreck Chipanga, an election victory ‘present’, declared they would ‘cleanse’ Rusape of MDC supporters, who they have branded vana vaBlair (Tony Blair’s offspring), in apparent reference to British Prime Minister Tony Blair.

Most of the affected, reports say, are ordinary vendors, flea market operators and Tuck-shop owners who are said to be living in constant fear.

Some of the said victims include KC, TC (Muchauraya’s campaign manager), NF and IC (Muchauraya’s party agent at Croston farm near Rusape town). It is alleged that an initial report by the said victims to the police yielded no results as an unidentified police officer accused the quartet of inviting trouble for themselves by joining the MDC.

However, sources said, the Officer Commanding Rusape District, after seeing the gravity of the case, allowed a docket (RRB#172833) to be opened and immediately ordered investigations to be made.
